Do you know that when you touch something, the possibility of you to buy that specific thing will be much more higher, compared to things that you do not touch. This is because of the inner ‘mine’ feeling that makes you thought that the thing is yours, by just touching.

According to Suzanne Shu, a marketing professor at UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, “When you touch something, you instantly deel more of a connection to it. That connection stirs up an emotional reaction – Yeah, I like the feel of it. This can be mine. – And the emotion can cause you to buy something you never would have bought if you hadn’t touched it.”

Meanwhile, from Joann Peck, a marketing professor at University of Wisconsin’s business school, “If you don’t want to spend more money, be careful what you touch. Touching something gives you that little snese of control and that alone can increase your feeling of ownership”.

So my friends out there, try to buy something without touching it. But how to do it. Or better, if you do not plan to buy anything, don’t touch it!

The New eBay headed in the Wrong Direction?

I was surfing the net when an interesting article about eBay got my attention. The writer is Sean Silverthorne, an editor of HBS Working Knowledge, which provides a first look at the research and ideas of Harvard Business School faculty. Working Knowledge, which won a Webby award in 2007, currently records 4 million unique visitors a year. He has been with HBS since 2001.

This is his article.

Incoming eBay CEO John Donahoe is taking the mega online auctioneer in the absolute wrong direction with his recent moves to “muffle” buyer ratings, raise fees on small sellers while offering discounts to power vendors, and emphasizing fixed-price products at eBay Express, says Harvard Online blogger John Sviokla.

What Donahoe apparently misses in all these changes is that eBay is not a retailer, but rather a social organism that created a way to find latent demand and link it up to sources of supply. To that end, he should not be focusing on new modes of retailing as a means of growth but pursuing new ways to discover even more nascent forms of demand and even more innovative supply methods.

In other words, eBay has lost its once intense focus on the customer.

Of course, eBay has suffered from slowing sales and loss of market share for a number of quarters, so Donahoe has a mandate for change, to use current political lexicon. (Current CEO Meg Whitman is stepping down at the end of March.) He has announced a number of initiatives to attract more buyers and sellers, such as a search capability to make it easier to find products and best prices on the site.
